Asychronicity: Explore the “Reflective Captioned Artifacts” (RCA) technique for applying Bloom’s higher order thinking to threads and information in an online course. It places the burden of sorting through the materials on the students and asks them to pay attention to events in the learning process that may have made a difference for them. This is a way to think about how you will deal with such items as threaded discussions in your own course.

Watch Dick Nysse’s struggle with figuring out how to create communities of interpretation in the presentation called Scripture Summary. Note that threaded discussions are process rather than product writing. We can paralyze ourselves with polishing and lose the thrust of a good conversation in which people can change their minds. Process writing doesn’t mean bad grammar is OK or the rules of netiquette shouldn’t be followed.
