Semiotics is simply the science of signs. It is the study of how speech events, which are not signs, are translated rather arbitrarily into interpretable codes.  Our understanding how signs shape the way we interpret social phenomena will help us to better understand how transformations in human consciousness necessitate shifts in the way we do history.
