Arms of Priests
The most basic rank of clergyman is that of priest. No papal legislation specifically mentions priestly coats of arms, rather centuries-old traditions govern the ornaments for the coats of arms of priests. In keeping with the simplicity of life he is called to live, priests ornament their coat of arms with nothing but a black galero and one black tassel on each side of the shield. If he is a member of the Order of Malta or of the Order of the Holy Sepluchre, he may display an appropriate symbol, but beyond that nothing else.
Priests that have authority over other priests, such as canons, deans, and rectors, are allow modifications to the basic priestly ornamentation.
- Canons and Rectors -- A rector is allowed a black galero with six black fiocchi, three on either side
- Deans -- A dean is allowed a black galero with two black fiocchi on either side.
