OSCAR ROMERO

Mons. Oscar Arnulfo Romero

A bishop will die,

but the Church- the people of God- will never perish.

"Voice of the voiceless"

"La voz de los sin voz"

Oscar Romero was born in Ciudad Barrios, a town in the mountainous east of El Salvador, on 15 August 1917.

He was the second of seven children. When he was thirteen he declared a vocation to the priesthood.

In February 1977, Oscar Romero became archbishop of San Salvador.

Archbishop Romero was a source of strength and hope for the poor and for the oppressed of his country, working with and for them, taking their struggles as his own.

On March 24, 1980, while celebrating the Eucharist, Archbishop Romero was shot and killed at the altar by a death squad assassin.

"May God have mercy on the assassins. If they succeed in killing me, I shall arise in the Salvadoran people." Oscar Romero
