Andrew
"As
he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is
called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they
were fishermen. He said to them, 'Come after me, and I will make you
fishers of men.' At once they left their nets and followed him." (Matthew 4:18-20)
Andrew. He was active in bringing people to Jesus, including his brother Peter. “Andrew shares with Peter the distinction of being the first apostles of indeed disciples called by Jesus to join him…Like his brother Simon, afterward called Peter, Andrew was a fisherman, of Capernaum-Bethsaida, live in the same house with him and used the same boat…. At the feeding of the five thousand, in John 6:8, 9, it is Andrew who says, “’There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and a couple fish, but what is that among so many people?’” (Edgar J. Goodspeed. The Twelve, The Story of Christ’s Apostles. New York: Collier Books, 1962. p. 48).
St Andrew, whose feast is celebrated on November 30 is seen in this window. Jesus found Andrew and his brother, Peter, casting their nets into the sea and He told them, “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” The fisherman’s net, symbolical of Andrew’s former way of life is seen at his feet. In his left arm he holds the Sacred Scriptures, symbolical of his new found mission to preach the Gospel to all nations. He stands in front of the saltire cross (X), a reminder of the way in which he met his death and entered into eternal glory. In the window below we see two crossed fish and an anchor, reminding us of Andrew’s commitment to the sea as a fisherman. In the window above, the chalice with a cross rising from it is a symbol of Our Lord’s obedience to the Will of the Father, even to death on the cross. The death of Jesus on the cross gives meaning to the theological virtue of hope symbolized by the anchor below the chalice and the cross. (Compiled by Phyllis Evans)
