Windows 7 Upgrade for $29.99 until January 3rd, 2010.

Microsoft is releasing a new version of Windows, Windows 7, on October 22nd. Between now and January 3rd, 2010, you can purchase upgrades to either Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional for only $29.99. This is a very good deal. Normally, these upgrades cost $120 or $200, respectively. To take advantage of this offer, visit http://www.win741.com and click the "Buy" square.

Upgrade Notes:

  • This upgrade offer allows you to upgrade from Vista or XP to Windows 7. If you want to know what version of Windows 7 you can or should upgrade to, click here for a chart. Click on "Step 1" once the page loads.

  • To test if your computer is capable of running Windows 7, download and run the Upgrade Advisor by clicking here.

  • Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 involves the deletion of everything on your computer. You need to back up your data, install Windows 7, and then put your files back on your computer. This is not the case for users of Windows Vista.

Welcome to all students, those returning for another year and those joining us for the first time. Your SCS staff for this academic year are Jason Signalness, Brian Alford, and Gregory Carl. Feel free to contact any of us with your student computer problems. The ideal way to contact us is by filling out work order, either on this web site via the "Work Order" link above, or by filling out a paper form (available on the main bulletin board) and placing it in Jason Signalness' mailbox.

Here is some news to help you get started this year:

  • E-mail system changes: A new e-mail system is now in place for students. All student e-mail addresses will change from "@kenrick.edu" addresses to "@my.kenrick.edu" addresses. See the news info below for details. If you have questions, open a work order with SCS.

  • Virus Software: The OIT will not be distributing CA Antivirus Software to students this year. We are instead going to rely on an antivirus software program called AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.5 for those of you who don't already maintain your own Norton, McAfee, or other antivirus program. This can be downloaded at no cost to you from this link: http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe

  • Voice Mail Setup: Instructions on how to configure your Kenrick voicemail can be found under the "Setup Instructions" menu above.

  • Office Software: MS Office Ultimate 2007 can be purchased by students for only $59.95 by visiting http://www.theultimatesteal.com. This offer is from Microsoft. Some other Microsoft products, including Expression Web and Virtual PC, may be downloaded for free by students at http://dreamspark.com.

  • Viewing the Official Seminary Calendar: The easiest way to check what's going on at Kenrick is to visit http://kenrickparish.com and click the link for "Institutional" calendar.

  • Subscribing to the Calendar: If you'd like to subscribe to the Institutional Seminary calendar using an email program such as Outlook, Apple's iCal, or Google Calendar, copy and paste http://www.dynacal.com/calendars/kgs.ics into your calendar software's "subscribe" feature. On a Mac, open iCal, click the Calendar menu, and click "Subscribe" and follow the instructions. If you use Google's calendar, see this page for instructions. If you use Outlook 2007, open the Tools menu, click Account Settings, and then click the Internet Calendars tab.

  • The Kenrick file server: Kenrick has a file server that students can use to access files from different locations in the building or to share files between students. Read about it by clicking the "Computer Support>Using the File Server" menu above.

  • Blackboard has been upgraded: Click here to read about how the new version differs from the one we used last year.

Let us know if we can be off assistance in any way with your computer needs.

Big news for the Network - a new email protocol has been established through Microsoft's Live@edu system. Beginning fall 2009, all students will receive email accounts that look like jstudent@my.kenrick.edu instead of jstudent@kenrick.edu. That "my" comes from the exchange server hosted by Microsoft, and it allows us to do quite a few interesting things that we were unable to do before. The old account settings in place for returning students will continue through December 1, 2009, after which all @kenrick.edu student accounts will be deleted. To facilitate the transition, we ask that all returning students begin to accustom themselves to the "my.kenrick.edu" accounts at the beginning of the school year even though your "kenrick.edu" accounts will remain active through the first semester.

You can set up your email through the following links:

Email Setup: http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/cc875966.aspx

Live@EDU sign-in: https://outlook.com

Some other helpful links:

Free downloads to Microsoft Products such as Expression Web and Virtual PC: https://www.dreamspark.com/ (Students will need to select USA as the country, and Missouri as the state - Kenrick-Glennon Seminary will show up in the latter.) These free downloads will only work following student activation of their Live@EDU accounts.

A new file server has been installed on the network. This means several things for you:

  • Any files you save in "My Documents" on a classroom or lab computer will be in your "My Documents" folder on any other lab or classroom computer (but NOT the computers in the library) you use. Therefore, save files in "My Documents" when using classroom or lab computers, not on the desktop.

  • Using the "Public" file server space, you can share large files between computers in the building (except in the library) rather than trying to e-mail them or burn them to CDs.

  • Using the "Private" file server space, you can access your files from anywhere in the building (except in the library). For example, you can build a Powerpoint presentation in the lab or in your room, save it to the file server, and access it in a classroom without carrying a USB drive with you.

For detailed instructions on how to use the file server, choose "Using the File Server" under the "Computer Support" menu option at the top of this page. There is video demonstration that may be helpful for Windows users.

A new firewall and Internet filter has been installed. You may notice certain sites are inaccessible. If you are unable to reach a site that should be accessible, or if a program which accesses the Internet no longer works, e-mail webrequest@kenrick.edu or open an SCS work order by clicking "Work Order" in the menu above.
